Gluten Free Ice Cream Cone Review“As I have mentioned before, I live in a very small rural town. There are not a lot of gluten free options available nearby for my son who has Celiac Disease. Don’t get me wrong, we are not completely without options. The local grocery store has a small section of dry gluten free products, plus a few items in the freezer section as well. There are also two local restaurants where my son can get a good gluten free meal. However, for a wider selection of products, we have to drive about forty minutes west, which really isn’t too bad. In Fort Smith, Arkansas, there is a great little natural foods store called Olde Fashioned Foods. Although the store is fairly small, they have an excellent selection of gluten free items, and will gladly look to see if they can order a specific item if they do not have it in stock. And browsing the aisles of this little gem of a store is where I came across “Let’s Do…® Gluten Free Ice Cream Cones“. Winner, winner, chicken dinner!

There has not been an ice cream cone in my house since my son was diagnosed with Celiac Disease around eight years ago. At the time, ice cream cones seemed like something that we could easily do without. It was much more difficult to live a gluten free lifestyle at the time, and with the new diagnosis, my wife and I were experiencing something of the “deer in the headlights” effect. Our priorities were finding everyday items like bread, so we didn’t give ice cream cones much thought. You can always put ice cream in a bowl. To be perfectly honest, I had not given another thought to ice cream cones in all that time. That is, until I saw this box sitting on the top of a shelf in the Olde Fashioned Foods store.

That night, after a 28-14 win for my son’s junior high football team (Yay!), we celebrated by sitting on the couch with our first ice cream cones in years, filled with Blue Bell’s Happy Tracks ice cream. Keep in mind, none of the three members of this family had eaten an ice cream cone in at least seven years. Personally, I remember the plain cones that we use to buy as kids to be somewhat stale and tasteless, and never really enjoyed them anyway. Not so with these gluten free ice cream cones. They were crispy, did not fall apart in your hands, and best of all, were very tasty! My son swears his was delicious, but in all honesty I’m not sure how he could have possibly tasted it in the three seconds it took him to inhale it. My wife’s first comment was “It doesn’t taste like gluten free”, which is glowing praise from her.

The praise doesn’t end there, either. After eating the dessert, my son went to check the carbohydrates so he could enter it into his insulin pump. Two grams! That’s it! On top of that, each cone is only twelve calories. If you know of a fat free or light gluten free ice cream you like, you could easily pair it with these gluten free ice creams cones for a delicious treat that doesn’t make your waistline scream at you the entire time you are eating it. There just isn’t anything bad to say about this product. Get out and try some today!
